CAGT Mission Statement

It is our belief that all humans have an inherent right to develop their full potential. The purpose of the Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented is to foster an understanding of all gifted children and their exceptional needs, and to advocate for appropriate education through partnerships with educators, parents, administrators, legislators, and the general public.

  • CAGT is...

a non profit advocacy organization with a 30 year history of providing leadership and support to students, parents and educators of gifted young people in Colorado. By way of affiliate members across the state, CAGT has endeavored to keep all school districts and policy makers aware of the issues surrounding gifted education.

  • The people...

Gifted young people are typically those who score in the top 5 percent of the population on an I.Q. test. The Colorado Department of Education reports there are 51,083 students in Colorado formally identified as gifted (2005-2006). Some estimates place the total number of gifted students in the state to be in the neighborhood of 69,000. Colorado has a growing number of highly qualified educators specialized in gifted education. Gifted individuals are all around us.

  • The promise...

is that gifted education will continue to enrich our world and nation with intellectual manpower as we face a changing future. The promise is that all children, including those that identified as gifted, will achieve to their fullest potential. Gifted individuals account for the broad majority of new inventions, patents, research and development breakthroughs, and advances in technology.Immersion in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields of study is a recent approach.

Need Your Support for Javits Gifted and Talented Education Act!

FISCAL YEAR 2011: YOUR ASSISTANCE NEEDED THIS WEEK

As the fiscal year (FY) 2011 process kicks off in Congress, NAGC asks your assistance this week to garner support for the Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Act.

Long-time gifted and talented education supporters in Congress are circulating “Dear Colleague” letters, requesting Representatives (or Senators) to join them on a letter to the Appropriations Committee subcommittees that fund education programs.  Our ability to gather co-signers is an important indication of support for the program.  As you know, the Javits Act is the only federal program specifically focused on the needs of America’s 3 million academically gifted students

Please contact your Representative and Senators in support of the program.  The House deadline is this week, so those calls should be made first.

New national study finds equity and opportunity threatened by growing national “excellence gap”

Mind the (Other) Gap!: The Growing Excellence Gap in K-12 Education, a new report from the Indiana University Center for Evaluation and Education Policy, finds that the achievement gaps among high-ability students from different economic, racial and linguistic backgrounds in the U.S. are large and growing.

The comprehensive study of NAEP longitudinal and state data indicate that at the current pace of achievement, even improving gaps could take more than a century to close. In praising the report, NAGC executive director Nancy Green said, "the ever-widening excellence gap is a tragedy-in-waiting that can only be addressed by devoting attention and resources to meet the unique learning needs of high-potential students.”
